Education

The Washoe County School District provides students living in the Reno metropolitan area with 89 schools to pursue their educational requirements. Overall, there are 92 schools in the district, with 64 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, 12 high schools and a special education facility. Additionally, the Washoe County School District also has a magnet high school and the Academy for Arts, Career and Technology, putting the students of North Reno on the fast track to learning and success. The District also sponsors eight public charter schools.

For students ready to progress on to a university, college or vocational/trade school, there are many accredited universities and colleges located in Reno or around the area. The University of Nevada, Reno, the oldest university in Nevada, currently has approximately 16,000 students enrolled; many of the students are from Nevada. The University offers degrees in agriculture, journalism, mining engineering, and is one of two universities in the country that offers a program in Basque Studies. Doctorate degrees are also offered here. Other colleges within the area include Truckee Meadows Community College, Morrison University, and Western Nevada Community College. The next closest state university outside of Reno is California State University, Sacramento, which is about 130 miles away.

Attractions & Points of Interest

Reno is widely known for its casinos and gaming industry, along with its proximity to Lake Tahoe and the many skiing/snowboarding resorts located around the lake. Located about 30 miles from Reno and Sparks, Lake Tahoe offers skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts with a breathtaking backdrop, beginner to advanced trails and courses, and seven resorts around the lake for winter sports fanatics to try out. In fact, one of the resorts, Squaw Valley Ski Resort, is a contender for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

It’s quite easy to travel around North Reno as there is an excellent public transportation system. To alleviate traffic congestion and reduce noise pollution, the tracks of the ReTRAC (Reno Transportation Access Corridor) were lowered below street level. This was one of the largest public works projects undertaken in the area, and was done as part of the revitalization of downtown Reno. Additionally, locals have taken it upon themselves to reclaim parts of downtown and have revamped the area, opening new clubs and fine dining and turning the area into a happening place.

For those who’d like to learn more about the cultural and historical offerings of Reno, museums such as the National Automobile Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, and the Wilbur D. May Museum are excellent places to start. The National Automobile Museum is located in downtown Reno along the Truckee River and features exhibits of cars dating back from the turn of the 20th century, four galleries, artwork and collectibles. Truly a museum to check out if you’re a car enthusiast! The Nevada Museum of Art is an impressive four-story building built by renowned architect Will Bruder. Featuring current and touring exhibits such as photography, landscape art and modern design, the Museum is dedicated to enriching the lives of visitors by providing a “forum for the presentation of creative ideas.” The Wilbur D. Mays Center, named after the philanthropist and local rancher, includes an arboretum, museum and is owned and operated by the Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space. The museum is located in the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Annual festivals and street fairs also abound in Reno, such as the Great Reno Balloon Race, Hot August Nights, Night of All Nations, Reno Jazz Festival, National Championship Air Races & Street Vibrations, and the Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive, to name a few.

Parks & Recreation

Golfers of all skill levels will be able to take a swing on the links at the Sierra Sage Golf Course, located about 30 minutes north of Reno. The greens at Sierra Sage have enough hazards to make them intimidating enough for a challenging round of golf. Day rates and twilight rates are available, and a reservation is not necessary. Rosewood Lakes Golf Course is also located in Reno and offers panoramic views, greens and fairways set in the midst of the natural beauty of the desert. The Rosewood Lakes Golf Course features 60 acres of federally protected wetlands for the wildlife and fowl that inhabit the area, four sets of tees, on-site restaurants and a relaxing atmosphere.

Reno is home to several parks popular with the active populace. Idlewild Park features several interconnecting lakes and the charming City of Reno Municipal Rose Garden. This lovely garden includes 2,400 rose plants that represent 560 varieties. Picnic facilities, barbeques, a large playground with baseball diamonds, volleyball courts and a pool are all available in this park. The Virginia Lake Recreation Area is located in the heart of Reno and includes picnic tables, jogging and biking trails and of course, the picturesque lake. A favorite among locals, this park is perfect to spend the day at, whether you’re there to feed the ducks or take part in a brisk jog around the lake. If horseback riding in a park is your cup of tea, head over to Bartley Ranch Park. With horseback riding and mountain biking trails and the old Huffaker School (a one-room schoolhouse), it’s no wonder why this historical park is so special.

Winters in Reno are excellent as it allows for partaking in winter-related sports. Probably the season that draws in the most tourists, ski resorts such as Heavenly, Sierra at Tahoe, Squaw Valley Ski Resort and Sugar Bowl are all located within 98 miles from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. If you’re not exactly a snow bunny and would rather kayak along the lake, fish, water ski, wakeboard, parasail or swim, Reno offers many opportunities for this during the other three seasons. The Truckee River is the perfect place to do all of these activities as it runs from Lake Tahoe into the center of downtown Reno and right up to Pyramid Lake (a saltwater lake in the Great Basin).
